Why consider a private yoga session?

There are many reasons why private lessons are beneficial instead of, or as an additional add on to, group yoga classes. Unlike classes, private sessions are on a one to one (or one to two) basis at my private studio next to my home in Colinton.

Gaining initial experience:

Beginning yoga can feel overwhelming in a typical class setting, particularly during the first few classes. It can seem difficult to keep up and personal flexibility might require a little work before it becomes easier to get into different poses. Beginners can avoid feeling overwhelmed and uncomfortable by taking private lessons to get started. I help you with each move personally and can help improve form immediately, which makes it easier to get started.

Focusing on personal goals:

Private yoga sessions also offer you the ability to focus on personal interests, concerns or goals. Instead of following along with me in a class setting, a private lesson allows an individual to set specific goals and plans, such as personal goals for flexibility and strength.

Creating a convenient, personalised schedule:

Can't get to a class? A private lesson can fit around even the most hectic of schedules. Taking lessons at any time of the day, depending on work and/or social obligations, allows more flexibility in your yoga practice.

Overcoming health concerns:

Injuries and health concerns can make a normal yoga class impractical for some participants. When health concerns are a potential issue, it can be best to have a private yoga lesson. I can work around the problem as the session is personalised for you and avoid further complications.

Developing a plan for personal home yoga:

A private yoga lesson makes it possible to create a personalised plan that is appropriate for practising in the home at a future date.

Working on in-depth practice:

Although beginners can benefit from private lessons to gain confidence and learn safe practices, private lessons are also beneficial for advanced clients. Private instruction can allow you to take your yoga practice to the next level. Advanced classes, in a group setting, might not offer the level of challenge and planning that is required for more advanced yogis. There are many poses that I do not teach in a group setting for safety reasons that can be taught one-to-one or one-to-two.


The truth is, standing up and trying something new in front of a large group of people isn’t for everyone and can actually put a lot of people off getting involved. A private yoga session allows you the privacy to explore yoga in your own way without worrying about what’s going on around you.

Going at your own pace:

A private yoga session means that you will move at your own place. This could mean taking things slower or faster than you may do with a group class. Whatever your personal needs are, we can develop your practice at a pace that suits you and find modifications that can also be taken to a group class.

Combine your session with muscle energy techniques or myofascial release:

If you are using yoga to target increasing flexibility in a particular area, it may be useful to incorporate alternative techniques to lengthen those tissues as part of the session.

Creating your ideal environment:

Hot or warm, bright or candlelit, fragrant oils or not, the choice is yours. The room will be set up depending on your requirements.

How much does it cost?

A 1 hour private session costs £40 for one or two people. If you want to book for two people it is important that your goals are similar.

Preparing for your session:

It is advisable not to eat a full meal less than three hours before a session, as it impacts on your digestion, making it uncomfortable for you. If you get hungry or know that you feel weak if you don't eat, have a small snack before but try to leave at least 30 minutes between eating and starting the session. 

Wear something that's not too tight and allows you to move freely. Yoga is best performed in your bare feet or yoga shoes. If you prefer to wear socks they should be non-slip (yoga or pilates socks are ideal).

Please feel free to bring any yoga equipment that you wish if you would like to use your own.

I have mats, blocks, straps, bolsters and blankets available in the studio.
